It took Alyssa Thompson five WSL games to finally get her first win on the board. If you remember, the USWNT forward had to bide her time for chances with Chelsea. But she made the most of them when they came by, scoring a goal and adding an assist in a 4-0 home win over Paris FC last month. However, while she found success in European matches, Thompson had yet to find the net in the league.

That changed on Saturday though, when the 21-year-old broke her WSL scoring drought with a sharp early strike against Arsenal. “It was amazing—it honestly felt like a dream,” Thompson said afterward. And fair enough, the goal was a beauty, a real display of slick tiki-taka football.

What’s more is that her performance even caught the attention of U.S. soccer legend Christen Press, who was clearly impressed by the youngster’s breakout moment. “First thing I saw when I opened my eyes, my girl Alyssa Thompson scoring like a boss. Woke tobin up immediately,Press’ Instagram story reaction read, accompanied by a clip of the pivotal goal.

Well, that goal was nothing short of spectacular. If you checked, Thompson put in an impressive 86-minute shift, linking up with fellow American Catarina Macario at the front of Chelsea’s attack. And yes, it didn’t take her long to make an impact either. Just nine minutes in, Thompson opened the scoring to give the league leaders a 1–0 advantage.

After a clever layoff to Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, Thompson got the ball back and wasted no time, curling a looping first-time shot into the far-left corner that screamed pure class. However, it wasn’t enough for the win, as Arsenal’s Alessia Russo scored a last-minute equalizer at the 87-minute mark.

Nonetheless, the draw keeps Chelsea sitting comfortably at the top of the WSL table with 20 points. And it just added an extra sparkle to Christen Press’ ongoing retirement celebrations.

Since announcing her retirement last month, Press has been sharing glimpses of her CP23 Eras Party on Instagram. The celebrations were complete with personal memorabilia, friends and family in attendance, and tributes to her career. And really, there couldn’t have been a better moment for her to see the next generation of USWNT talent shining so brightly, with Thompson carrying the torch forward in style.

A legacy that continues from Press to Thompson

Call it coincidence or fate, but the timing of Christen Press’s retirement and Alyssa Thompson’s breakout couldn’t have been scripted any better. Why? Because just as one American star forward was closing her incredible chapter, another was stepping into her own spotlight.

Remember Thompson’s first goal for Chelsea last month? It came on the very eve of Press’s retirement announcement. And for Thompson, it wasn’t just a goal; it was a moment that carried meaning. “I’ve always looked up to her,” she said back then. And yes, you could sense that admiration in how she plays—with confidence, composure, and the same creative flair that defined Press’s career.

So, scoring her first European club goal at the very moment her idol was bowing out felt like a poetic passing of the torch. It’s as if the storylines of two generations briefly intertwined… Even Press shared a video of Thompson’s goal, writing that it was a full circle moment on social media. Not only that, but the moment carried an extra layer considering Press mentored Thompson when the pair were both at Angel City.

Thompson’s first goal in Chelsea may have been her personal triumph. But in spirit, it felt like a shared moment between mentor and successor. Consider it a fitting bridge between eras for U.S. women’s soccer.
