He was reportedly training in Florida while his family stayed in Yekaterinburg. As such, the only time he got to spend with them was through video calls, but a 10-hour time difference meant the calls had to be done before bedtime. 

At the time, Yan shared in an interview with ESPN MMA, “Sometimes I try to wait until they wake up, so we can chat for a half hour, and then I can go to bed.” 

Even Petru Grati, who was responsible for setting up the training camp, confessed, “It’s hard for him. He’s not telling you, but I see it when he’s talking to his wife on FaceTime. … I’m looking at his face. He’s missing them. He’s a family guy… He’s telling me, ‘My kids are going to grow up, and what are they going to remember? Me home or somewhere else?”
