While Shedeur Sanders was making his NFL debut on November 16, reports came out about a burglary in his home in the Cleveland suburb of Granger Township. Now, months after the brazen crime, the open investigation has taken a significant turn.

The Medina County Sheriff’s Office released an official statement confirming the arrests of three major suspects in the ongoing investigation. The fourth suspect, the driver of the car, remains at large. However, his warrant for arrest has been released as well.

A report by Officer Charles Johnson, obtained by Fox News Digital, stated that the three suspects ransacked a bedroom, rifled through nightstands, and searched closets. They used their cellphone flashlights to navigate the home. It also stated that they carried multiple bags with them when exiting home, and disappeared into the woods.

The sheriff’s office told The Athletic that they will hold a media conference on Thursday at 11 a.m. ET to provide more details on the case.

The released statement from the Medina County Sheriff’s Office states that the break-in happened around 6:46 p.m. on November 16. They said security cameras inside the house recorded the suspects moving in and out of different parts of Sanders’ home. The burglars spent almost 12 minutes at the QB’s home and packed belongings worth approximately $200,000.

The culprits were not named in any official release, and Sanders hasn’t yet spoken about the arrests either.

However, Sanders had spoken about the situation with optimism when he was named the primary QB for the Cleveland Browns in Week 12 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

“I would say definitely mentally [and] emotionally,” Sanders had said in a press conference back in November. “I know it’s a trending topic that my house got broken into, but I’m in a mental space now to where there’s not too much that can phase me, honestly. None of my jewelry got took anyway… just caught slipping.”

According to the latest release, the investigation is now complete, with just the driver involved in the burglary to be captured. It remains to be seen how long it takes for the local authorities to close the case. However, Sanders’ case wasn’t the first one that saw robbers targeting athletes across the globe.

Shedeur Sanders becomes the latest target of a bigger case

During the 2024 NFL season, police investigated break-ins at the homes of multiple players, including the Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, in early October. Four Chilean nationals were arrested in that burglary, and authorities released a photo of them posing with the stolen items.

Another case occurred on December 9, 2024, when officers responded to a reported burglary at the residence of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow while he was playing in a Monday night game.

Several other star athletes have been targeted by thieves while they were playing in games, including NBA star Luka Dončić when he was still with the Dallas Mavericks and the NFL’s New Orleans Saints’ Cameron Jordan. Consequently, the FBI had warned the leagues about such incidents in their high-profile players’ homes.

“While many burglaries occur while homes are unoccupied, some burglaries occur while residents are home,” the FBI report said, per the AP. “In these instances, individuals are encouraged to seek law enforcement help and avoid engaging with criminals, as they may be armed or use violence if confronted.”

The federal government believed that these groups have been using technology to bypass security systems, block wireless internet connections, and disable devices. They are also obscuring security cameras and hiding their identities. According to their research, most of the robberies happen quickly, with the thieves targeting jewelry and cash, something that happened in Sanders’ case as well.

Then, quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who was with the New York Jets at the time, had suggested how the NFL has resources to help players come up with a plan for securing their property. Some NFL players hire their own private security.

As investigations into athlete-targeted burglaries continue, the focus has shifted back to how the league can provide the required help to these athletes as they take individual actions.
