Essentials Inside The Story
- The Green Bay Packers’ 31-27 wild-card loss to the Chicago Bears resulted in firing rumors for coach Matt LaFleur.
- However, QB Jordan Love has a positive message for his coach.
- LaFleur has a 76-40-1 record with the Packers.
Following the Green Bay Packers’ 31-27 wild-card loss to the Chicago Bears, doubts about head coach Matt LaFleur’s future shot up. While losing a playoff game may not always lead to firing, letting opponents erase an 18-point deficit is a big enough letdown to enrage the front office. And now quarterback Jordan Love has joined the piping-hot conversation, making his thoughts on the matter clear.

“I definitely think Matt should be the head coach. I got a lot of love for Matt,” he said during the post-game press conference. “I think he does a great job.”
Love offered firm support to LaFleur but didn’t sugarcoat what his team needs to do to get over the “hump.” In his blunt view, moving past the ongoing struggles starts with winning games like the one against Chicago. The loss indeed left a sour taste, but it’s not surprising. Green Bay was up 21-3 at halftime and gave up three more points heading into the fourth quarter.

But the rallies that came from the Bears’ end vanished whatever the Packers had achieved until that point.
The franchise eventually walked off the field defeated for the second time in the wild-card round. And now LaFleur’s future hangs in the balance after spending seven seasons with the Packers. In his tenure with the Packers, he helped his team post a 76-40-1 record, took them to the playoffs six times, but they have not reached the Super Bowl yet.
With the recent loss, his postseason record now stands at 3-6. During the post-game conference, the coach addressed whether he would be around for the next season.

“With all due respect to your question, now is not the time for that,” he said. “I mean, I’m just hurting for these guys. I can only think about what just happened. There will be time for that.”
When asked what it means to work with the Packers, he had nothing but gratitude. Describing it as the “greatest organization”, Lafleur said the loss humbled him. He admitted feeling disappointed for everyone, including the locker room, fans, leadership, and employees.

The timing of these speculations regarding Matt’s employment is awkward, as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported just hours before the game that the coach may receive a contract extension.
He highlighted how team president Ed Policy doesn’t prefer keeping leaders in the dark about their future when they approach the last year of their contract. And guess what? LaFluer’s contract runs through the 2026 season, suggesting Green Bay planned to discuss a contract extension with him.

Jordan Love firmly rejects his coach’s assessment of the second half
The Bears finally hit a terrific milestone on Saturday night as they moved past the first playoff round in fifteen years. But the game wasn’t on their side as they closed the halftime. But then, QB Caleb Williams’ team recorded the largest postseason rally in franchise history, snatching the victory from its long-term rival, Green Bay. The Bears arrived in the second half at 21-3 and exploded for 28 points after the break.
Of the score, 25 points came in the fourth quarter alone on the back of three solid touchdowns. Caleb Williams led a six-play, 66-yard march that ended in the go-ahead touchdown with just 1:43 left on the clock. Love tried to bring his team back in the game by driving the Packers into Chicago territory. But his last throw fell incomplete in the end zone in the closing seconds of the game.

Post-game, LaFleur claimed that the Packers lost composure in the second half. But Love didn’t agree.

“I don’t think we don’t have the composure. I think it’s just the situation we put ourselves in,” he said. “Jumping out to a lead, doing what we wanted, and then a completely different story in the second half.
“For any team, that’s going to be frustrating, and you have to find ways to overcome that and get back to it. I think we did that, but it was a little too late. It’s just part of the situation we put ourselves in.”
The loss officially eliminated the Green Bay Packers from playoff contention, making the offseason questions even louder. Now, it will be interesting to see what the front office will do about the team’s ugly season end.
