Essentials Inside The Story

  • Chiefs issue a carefully worded statement addressing Rice's domestic violence allegations.
  • The wide receiver has allegedly been involved in an off-field incident.
  • Could Mahomes' mentorship help Rice become the best version of himself?

The Kansas City Chiefs are facing a legal firestorm allegedly involving wide receiver Rashee Rice. On January 7, his former girlfriend, Dacoda Nichole Jones, went public through Instagram and showed photos of physical abuse on multiple parts of her body. While she claimed she was abused for several years, she did not name Rice or anyone else in her post.

She mentioned her abuser was the father of her children. Rice has two children with Jones. Now, the Kansas City Chiefs released a statement that appeared to be regarding Rice, but the franchise, too, did not name him.

“The club is aware of the allegations on social media and is in communication with the National Football League,” the Chiefs mentioned in a statement to Front Office Sports. “We have no further comment at this time.”

Jones said in her Instagram post that their relationship ended two months ago. “I’m so tired of keeping quiet,” she wrote in the caption of her IG post. “I’m so tired of protecting his image. He’s very controlling there’s been times he’s come to my new home, broken my door, there’s been times when he would put his hands on me while I was pregnant, even had the audacity to lock me outside all night in ten-degree weather because he got caught cheating. He’s cut up all my shoes and clothes, leaving me with nothing because he’s gotten caught up.”

She also accused Rice of leaving their family in Kansas while he returned to his native Texas. Along with the photos, Jones further described in the caption what she noted was a long pattern of physical and emotional abuse, intimidation, and controlling behavior that allegedly continued even after her relationship ended with Rice. She also suggested there is an existing agreement with Rice, which she claimed he does not follow.

“He tries to put on this persona like he’s dad of the year,” Nichole wrote, arguing that Rice’s public image doesn’t match her private experience with him.

Rashee Rice’s ex-girlfriend also explained that she had finally decided to speak out to protect her peace, along with that of her children, and stand up for herself. Ultimately, she noted that she reached a breaking point after staying silent for years.

Rice has not responded publicly to the allegations.

However, his grandmother spoke to TMZ Sports and said that Jones was lying because of a dispute over paying for an apartment. So far, there have also been no confirmed reports of arrests, law enforcement involvement, or legal filings connected to Jones’ claims. Still, from the Chiefs’ perspective, a serious pattern involving Rice is hard to ignore.

The Chiefs have already dealt with a major off-field issue with Rashee Rice

Ever since Rashee Rice entered the league as a second-round pick from the 2023 NFL Draft, his career has carried more off-field baggage than anyone expected. These new allegations could become the second major legal controversy of Rice’s young career. He was already suspended for the first six games of the 2025 NFL season due to a hit-and-run incident in April 2024.

That case involved Rice driving a Lamborghini on a Dallas highway while allegedly racing his friend, who was in another car, leading to a major crash involving six vehicles. Police reports later claimed Rice was traveling at speeds up to 119 miles per hour. The crash on the North Central Expressway (U.S. Route 75) left at least seven people injured.

The incident led to criminal charges and multiple lawsuits against Rice.

Eventually, Rashee Rice pled guilty to two felony charges and received a sentence of 30 days in jail along with five years of probation. He also agreed to a $1.1 million settlement with one of the victims. Despite all of that, the Chiefs continued to support him throughout the legal process.

Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes said about a month after Rice’s car crash incident that he was trying to mentor Rice into becoming the best version of himself off the field. Last year in August, Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid had also praised the wideout’s growth during training camp. And why not? On the field, Rice has shown real value in the Chiefs’ offense when healthy and available.

Rashee Rice landed on season-ending injured reserve in Week 17 of the 2025 season due to a concussion. Even so, he managed to post 53 catches for 571 yards and five receiving touchdowns, plus five carries for 20 yards and a rushing score in eight games in the 2025 season. Those are solid numbers in an offense led by Patrick Mahomes, but the constant off-field issues keep pulling attention away from Rice’s football career.
