For the second time in as many weeks, Tony Romo is under fire from NFL fans, but his latest gaffe has the criticism reaching a fever pitch. The issue wasn’t his game analysis, in which the Broncos edged out Josh Allen’s team 33-30 in overtime. Instead, the former NFL quarterback made a frustrating on-air slip, confusing Allen with Patrick Mahomes. Immediately, it sparked a loud backlash and calls for accountability.

During Buffalo’s playoff matchup against Denver on Saturday, Romo misspoke while reacting to Josh Allen’s play early in the second quarter. The goof-up occurred when the quarterback scrambled up the middle, picking up a strong gain for a first down. When the network aired the replay, Tony Romo could be heard referring to Allen as Kansas City Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Mahomes.

This isn’t Romo’s first time making such a significant mistake on a live telecast. He made a few similar mistakes last week during the contest between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Bills, leaving fans livid. Some claimed he held an extreme bias regarding Allen. Meanwhile, others were not happy with him for getting the context wrong. He called Jacksonville “Underdogs” during the introduction, when they were actually the favorites to win the game.
Shortly after that broadcast, the former Cowboy addressed the backlash while speaking on SiriusXM with Adam Schein. He admitted to feeling under the weather during the game while highlighting the hectic nature of the job.
“I think anytime you’re in a position like we are, we’re on the air for three-and-a-half hours,” he said. “You’re always trying to do the best you can and everything. There’s always going to be moments where there’s all this great stuff, and then other stuff. It’s just part of being in your position. You’re just trying to make everyone enjoy the show, and learn a little bit and have a great time.”

Still, this particular slip stood out because Romo didn’t catch his mistake right away. That brief moment set social media on fire, with fans roasting him left, right, and center.

Fans grill Tony Romo for making an audacious mistake
Tony Romo has emerged as one of the top broadcasters at CBS since leaving the Dallas Cowboys in 2016. However, his time in the booth has witnessed a fair share of blunders over the years. It has enraged fans and sparked calls for swapping him with other former players who transitioned to broadcasting, such as JJ Watt. After all, the divisional game carried more weight than the regular-season games. Here’s a look at what fans on social media had to say.
One wrote, “I was today years old when I learned from Tony Romo that Mahomes is allowed to run the ball when Buffalo is playing Denver.”

The comment was rooted in heavy sarcasm. It poked fun at how Romo could bring Patrick Mahomes into conversations when the Chiefs aren’t even playing. This one also stands out because it sheds light on the general perception of Romo often favoring Mahomes in his commentary. The timing also made it even more surprising because the QB had been out since December because of an ACL injury.

However, the second comment explained why the injury could not keep Romo from appreciating Mahomes a bit more than others.
“Patrick Mahomes living rent-free in Tony Romo’s head💀,” the user wrote.
The third commented, “We’re just gonna ignore that the a-s hat that is Tony Romo calls @JoshAllenQB Mahomes. He and the @NFL have a hard on for Kermit the frog.”

The “Kermit the Frog” reference is a famous internet joke about Patrick’s voice. The fans who feel he gets too much praise mostly use it on social media.
Furthermore, a sports page on X shared a GIF of Joker being thrashed to the floor to explain Romo’s situation. They wrote, “Tony Romo on Twitter [X] after calling Josh Allen Mahomes.”
Similarly, another fan shared a video with foul language to describe fans’ opinions of Romo at the moment. It featured a man asking another, “Oh my god, bro, is d*** riding all you do? You literally got that n**** d*** in your mouth right now, I see it.”

While Romo blamed his last mistake on illness, this latest round of criticism will surely keep him on his toes.
