On the 2nd & goal play at 13:38 in the fourth quarter, Godwin ran through the Falcons’ defense as the quarterback Baker Mayfield got the snap. The signal caller fired the ball straight to the receiver, who jumped and caught it. But he also displayed the perfect technique in holding on to the ball.
As soon as the receiver caught the ball, he made a turn while clutching the ball close to his chest with both hands. The Falcons’ cornerback AJ Terrell had no chance of forcing the ball out of Chris Godwin’s grab. It took the Bucs ahead in the game to 28-14 as they also converted their 2-point attempt.

This season has been full of struggles for the 29-year-old. He suffered a hairline fracture in Week 5 that sidelined him for six weeks, from Week 6 to 11. That has shaken his confidence. In six games this season, Godwin Jr. has 20 receptions for 214 receiving yards with one score. However, his lone touchdown completed a monumental achievement.

Chris Godwin Jr. completes milestone in shocking loss
The Bucs announced that Godwin Jr. scored his 40th career touchdown against the Falcons. He is only the second player after wide receiver Mike Evans to score 40 TDs for the franchise. That’s impressive!
Chris Godwin Jr. has been a Bucs loyalist, playing in his ninth season for the NFC South franchise. In 117 seasons, the receiver has 599 receptions for 7,480 receiving yards. He also holds the Bucs franchise record for logging the most receptions in a regular season game when he recorded 15 receptions against the Falcons in Week 13 of the 2021 season.

However, his touchdown wasn’t able to save the Bucs from losing the seventh game of the season. The Falcons scored 15 points in the final ten minutes of the game while the Bucs failed to put any points on the board. Running back Bijan Robinson scored a touchdown around the 9-minute mark, taking the score 28-20.

Tight end Kyle Pitts had a phenomenal game with 11 receptions for 166 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He also scored a touchdown with less than four minutes remaining in the game. The Bucs still could have won, 28-26. But kicker Zane Gonzalez had other plans.
He netted the lone field goal of the game for the Falcons (his 11th overall in the 2025 season) with zero seconds remaining. As the ball went through the uprights, Chris Godwin Jr. and his teammates could feel the victory taken out of their grabs. However, fans were happy that their long-time receiver showed signs of a comeback.
