Essentials Inside The Story

  • Sean McDermott has given Josh Allen unmatched freedom
  • Allen's fearless playmaking sealed another big win for Buffalo
  • Allen broke more NFL records, proving why the Bills continue to ride on their QB-HC bond

While most coaches script their own strategies to improve a team’s chances of winning, in Buffalo, Bills head coach Sean McDermott is handing the keys over to quarterback Josh Allen. While it may be nothing new for the Bills Mafia, who have seen their franchise star change play in real time, a confirmation from the head coach himself might put more responsibilities on the signal caller’s shoulders.

“That’s not far off, really,” the head coach said about letting Allen create his own strategies based on the situations.

Case in point, the Bills’ last drive of the Week 14 win against the Cincinnati Bengals: The hosts were already winning with a 39-34 lead. But then Josh Allen got sacked on the second down. However, he didn’t fear the defense. Instead, Allen rushed down the ground on the 3rd & 15 play through the middle of the field with just under two minutes remaining in the regulation.

Now look at the reasoning. The Bills were already winning by five points and didn’t need a touchdown. The Bengals, however, could’ve used the last two minutes to win the game with a score. So, instead of making things easy for the visitors, the reigning MVP went on a 17-yard run to kill the clock.

If he hadn’t done anything, collapsing under the pressure, McDermott could’ve possibly gone for a punt on fourth down, giving the opponents at least two minutes. However, with that run, Allen kept their drive alive and ended the rival’s hopes of getting a win as the clock ticked to the finish. To Allen, the math was simple:

“Starting 15 (yards to go), you don’t expect the quarterback to run there,” Allen explained after the win. “I was expecting zero, so I changed the protection, changed the route from our back, and it (the route) just kinda opened up. Just took off and tried to get a first.”

To him, it was a thing that the word ‘just’ could explain. To the head coach, however, it is much more…

He’s just got this ‘It factor’ that is hard to question and hard to defend,” McDermott said of Allen’s ability to disrupt plays. “So that is, to me, the combination of an elite player playing at a high level.”

And this wouldn’t be the only time that Allen would’ve done this in their last game itself.

Josh Allen continues to write plays and trust McDermott

The Bills are the leading team to have the best-performing second half. The first, however, is always here and there. The same was the situation as Buffalo hosted the Bengals. But that didn’t stop Josh Allen from being the Superman Buffalo boasts about.

For instance, take the early second quarter when they trailed Cincinnati 14-3. At that point, the Bills needed two fourth-down conversions to reach the end zone for the first time. Then, Allen kept the drive alive on a 4th & 4 from the Bengals’ 45 by hitting wide receiver Gabriel Davis for a 17-yard gain along the sideline. Five plays later, the Bills faced 4th & 4 again from the Bengals’ 11.

But instead of letting the team punt, McDermott kept his offense on the field. But Allen, off script, found WR Khalil Shakir for an improbable 11-yard completion in the end zone to push the team to a 14-9 score and another two with a two-point attempt with a pass to tight end Dawson Knox to extend the score to 14-11 almost seven and a half minutes into the second quarter.

For the game, Buffalo went 3-of-4 on fourth down with quarterback Josh Allen completing passes to three different receivers, including two touchdowns.

“Really trust Coach McDermott for being aggressive tonight on fourth downs. I know early on in the game, too, we converted on a few. So, yeah, it feels good to have that trust in him,” said Allen.

Though fans often demand McDermott’s resignation, Allen keeps making crazy plays with big numbers for his team, record-breaking stats, and to save the head coach’s job. The Bills are truly a tough team to beat when they play together.

Josh Allen breaks the NFL record again

At this point, the Bills play any game with the hopes that their quarterback will break more NFL records. During their ninth win of the season, Josh Allen again etched his name in the NFL record books.

He finished the game with 22 of 28 passes for 251 passing yards and three passing touchdowns. He was dominant in the run game as well, finishing with nine carries for 78 yards and one score. It is the second game in his career that he has had such impressive numbers. The first game was Week 14 last year, when he finished with 250 passing yards, 75 rushing yards, three passing and one rushing touchdown.

His total touchdowns this season are 34 (22 passing + 12 rushing scores). He finished the last two seasons with 20 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing scores as well. He is the first player to do that in three seasons.

Another milestone is becoming the first NFL player with 50 games having a passing and a rushing touchdown. That’s truly mind-boggling. But Sean McDermott has seen his signal caller make such moves at will. It was another great showdown for the Bills Mafia.
