The crowd at Soldier Field held its breath during the Bears‘ dramatic win over the Packers, especially after a scary moment involving quarterback Caleb Williams. Before his splendid 361-yard performance, Williams suffered an injury. He was seen limping following an awkward fall, sparking concerns among fans. So, what had gone down on the field?

“Bears QB Caleb Williams tripped and turned his ankle,” NFL reporter Arye Pulli wrote on X.

Before the Bears secured one of the most dramatic wins of the season, their quarterback’s brief injury left fans gasping. In a clip shared by Pulli, Caleb Williams tripped awkwardly and rolled his ankle in the third quarter. The incident unfolded when Chicago opened the second half after forcing a Green Bay three-and-out. The Bears reached the opponent’s 15-yard line, facing a crucial third-and-13.

After throwing an incomplete pass, the quarterback briefly contacted Packers defender Barryn Sorrell at the end of the play. In no time, he tripped and felt discomfort while walking. He limped off the field without immediately receiving any medical treatment. ESPN’s Courtney Cronin reported the player appeared to loosen up as he stood on the sideline.

“Caleb Williams looks visibly frustrated on the bench,” Cronin wrote. “He’s talking to Case Keenum while Tyson Bagent has a tablet in hand to the left of the other QBs.”

Additionally, NFL injury expert Dr. David J. Chao later explained that the QB likely suffered a right inversion ankle sprain on the play. He had expected him to return with taping or a brace and limited mobility. Williams then returned to the game during the Bears’ ongoing 76-yard drive that lasted nine plays and resulted in an interception. However, the 24-year-old didn’t let the injury leave any lasting impact as he exploded his way through the game.

Meanwhile, this wasn’t the first time Williams had suffered an injury and limped off the field. During the 31-3 win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 15, the player landed awkwardly after taking a shot from a defender on the last play of the first half. Much like tonight, the crowd saw him struggling while walking towards the locker room. While Williams doesn’t have any serious lingering ankle issues, he did “tweak” his ankle in the 2024 season.

Back then, both he and former head coach Matt Eberflus downplayed the issue, and Caleb Williams didn’t miss any time. While the quarterback’s tripping sent shivers, the Bears’ epic comeback became the biggest story of the night.

Caleb Williams’ team stuns Packers with massive fourth-quarter rally

Saturday’s game against the Packers marked Williams’ first playoff appearance of his career. He delivered under pressure by delivering a game-winning 25-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver DJ Moore with just 1:43 remaining before the final whistle. This was no ordinary comeback as the Bears erased an 18-point deficit to stop the Packers from advancing further and sparking calls for head coach Matt LaFleur’s firing.

Further, the win became even more unexpected and meaningful after considering how things looked bleak early for Chicago. The Bears were trailing 21-3 at halftime and could only gain three more points heading into the last quarter. But then, the team piled up 25 unanswered points while holding Green Bay to just six. The Packers had one last chance to win when QB Jordan Love led them into the opponent’s territory.

However, Bears safety Jaquan Brisker broke up the pass on a third down near the end zone, sealing the Bears’ first postseason victory in 15 years. Moore weighed in on the game-winning drive, praising how Williams didn’t crack under pressure.

“He was right on track, never wavered,” Moore told ESPN on the field after the win, referring to Williams. “He was dialed in and ready to go. When the lights shine bright, he’s the brightest one, so he’s going to get us there. We just know our preparation is always key, and we lean on it at the end. We’ve got to be detailed at the end, and everything that we do, and go out there and execute it.”

The victory marked the Bears’ seventh fourth-quarter comeback of the season under head coach Ben Johnson. And now they head to the divisional-round home game next weekend.
