Dontrell Glover stepped up when Georgia needed him the most. After injuries sidelined key starters, the freshman offensive line took control of Kirby Smart’s offense. Since taking over the reins, Georgia has gone 9-0 with four wins against ranked opponents. Now, with playoffs knocking at their door, all eyes turn to Glover to lead the offensive front.

Meet Georgia’s OL Dontrell Glover

This season, Glover played right guard, appearing in 13 games. This 6’3”, 320-pound offensive lineman hails from Fairburn, Georgia, where he played at Langston Hughes High School as a standout lineman. He was the 323rd-ranked prospect nationally and the No. 19 interior offensive lineman before entering Georgia.

During his time at Hughes, he helped them smack a 12-1 record with a GHSA Class 5A semifinals. And they translated the same success with the Bulldogs too, ripping off six straight wins after beating Texas, where the team has averaged 33 points per game in that stretch. One of his best performances came against Ole Miss, during which Georgia accumulated 510 yards of total offense.

With that performance, Glover emerged as the best freshman guard in the country and became the most reliable option for giving protection to quarterback Gunner Stockton and a clean interior pocket while opening clean running lanes. All, this efforts led to Glover’s selection to the Coaches’ Freshman All-Southeastern Conference Team, with his teammates Chauncey Bowens and Elijah Griffin.

Georgia was always on Glover’s list as he grew up as a Bulldogs fan. Despite having an excellent high school record, he never expected an offer from them. But things turned when Kirby Smart extended an offer to him, turning his dream into reality. He first commits to Alabama, but then backs off his pledge, after which Georgia, Florida State, and Tennessee push hard to get him.

But after attending Georgia’s spring practice and spring game in Athens and visiting them more than 10 times, Kirby Smart’s became his ultimate destination. He entered the team with championship hopes and worked hard to get them in this season.

“I feel like Georgia is going to go above the moon,” Glover said. “We’re going to be one of those teams that nobody can stop.”

Smart and Georgia’s OL coach became the major reason behind Grover’s move.

“Kirby Smart is a cool guy,” Glover said. “Coach Searels is not one of those coaches. He’s going to stay on you and make you compete every day in practice.”

But it looks like that momentum just took a major hit after Glover’s arrest.

Kirby Smart’s playoff hope takes a serious hit

After winning the championship game against Alabama, Kirby Smart’s Georgia finally enters the playoffs with flying colors. But just when the win was all figured out, their offense took a major hit. As two of their freshmen offensive linemen, Dontrell Grover and running back Bo Walker, got arrested for shoplifting, it is a major distraction for the team at this point.

Police booked both players into Clarke County Jail in Athens, Georgia, on a misdemeanor charge of theft by shoplifting. Later, they got released after paying the fine, but the legal process is still ongoing.

Now, Kirby Smart already dismissed backup offensive lineman Nyier Daniels last month after his arrest for allegedly driving more than the speed limit of 150 mph while surpassing the police. So, this put both players in a skeptical mood.

Georgia’s spokesperson, Steve Drummond, acknowledged the situation but didn’t mention anything about their future.

“We were informed of the charges and are currently in the process of gathering additional information,” Steve Drummond said to ESPN’s Dan Murphy. “This is a pending legal matter and we will not have further comment at this time.”

With players’ fate hanging on by a thin thread, it will be interesting to see how Kirby Smart handles the fluctuations in the team and leads them to playoffs.
