The QB was set to start against Arkansas this weekend. However, during practice reps on Thursday, he re-aggravated his abdominal injury and was again listed out to start against the Razorbacks, as informed by interim head coach Frank Wilson. His status was updated from probable to questionable on the injury report by Friday night. However, the final report ruled him out of the game, and sophomore Michael Van Buren started against Arkansas.

Presently, it is not known when the QB will get healthy enough to make his appearance. Coach admitted that he himself is not sure of the exact diagnosis and what it means for his QB’s future.

Since pre-season, Garrett Nussmeier’s injury has posed a significant concern for the Tigers. It was not until September that Brian Kelly revealed his QB had been powering through a torso injury sustained after throwing so much during fall camp, which had slowed him down. Over the weeks, his recovery curve instilled confidence in the locker room as he helped LSU to a 20-10 win against the South Carolina Gamecocks. But an ankle issue marked another struggle for Nussmeier.

Then came the Aggies game, and he sustained a massive hit to his midsection, aggravating his abdominal injury. During the first quarter, he was seen clutching his stomach after receiving the hit. Once he moved to the sidelines, Holly Rowe reported that he was closely assisted by the medical staff.

“They are able to do some things at halftime to help him, some topical numbing cream, put some more padding on… massage,” she reported. With a toughness that comes prerequisite to playing the rugged game, the 6’2, 182-pound junior bounced back. However, with six minutes left on the clock in the fourth quarter, Kelly pulled him out of the field, much to Garrett’s frustration.

“Well, I would’ve been disappointed too,” Brian Kelly said. “If you took me out of the game in that situation, I would have been disappointed too, but it was a bigger picture. We were struggling in protection,” Kelly stated, according to on3.

“I thought it would have been unfair to have him in the game, under those circumstances, with where the game was clearly out of reach. To have him get injured in that situation, I thought, would have been malpractice from my standpoint.”

With just two games remaining in the regular season, it seems unlikely that Nussmeier will get back during the rest of the season.

With Garrett Nussmeier’s injury, LSU’s 2025 hopes lose shine

Baton Rouge is facing a turbulent time. Following their loss to Ole Miss, the Tigers have struggled to regain their footing. Garrett Nussmeier had been struggling with injuries all season long, but the loss of the Aggies’ game came too brutally.

Following a breakout 2024 season, Nussmeier was a constant name in the Heisman conversations. But plagued with injuries and an offense that couldn’t revive itself, the QB’s Heisman dreams came crashing down. So far, he has recorded 1,927 yards for 12 touchdowns and five interceptions and just one rushing TD.

However, the star quarterback is not the only one going through a challenging time. Along with its star quarterback re-injured, Brian Kelly was fired by Scott Woodward, who was then fired by the Louisiana governor a few days later.

Later, the program released an official statement stating that they never formally fired the head coach, as Woodson did not have the authority to do so. In response, Kelly has sued the program.

Although the Arkansas win had brought along a ray of hope, it needs to be seen how LSU wraps up its regular season.
