Laurie Canter is not the flashiest name in golf. However, he is notable for being one of the first players to rejoin the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour after a short but successful LIV Golf stint. While the English golfer picked up the clubs much later in his development, at age 13, his amateur career soon established him as one of the elites on the circuit. Since his reemergence into the DPWT, Canter has secured two wins. However, he remains winless on the PGA Tour.

Helping him navigate the greens and the pressure of stardom, his caddie, Max Smith, acts as his athletic backbone. Let’s learn more about the man behind Canter’s bags.

Max Smith is a longtime friend of Laurie Canter. They first met during their teenage years when they competed together in the junior events. Their friendship bloomed through their shared passion and has stayed strong over the years. Both later went on to compete in minor English professional tours, where Canter’s pro golfing career kick-started.

In contrast, Smith couldn’t find as much success as a pro on the circuit.

That’s when he transitioned his career to caddying, using his years of experience on the greens to read the greens. Although there is no exact start of Canter and Smith’s caddie-player relationship, Global Golf Post suggests the duo has been together for about a year now.

Quipping on his short-lived golfing career, Smith shared in a lighthearted manner, “After that my career stayed down here while his took off.” As he added the last part, he gestured his hands upwards, sharing his respect and admiration for his friend, Laurie Canter.

Regardless, Smith’s impact on Canter’s game is undeniable, helping him quickly climb the ranks to 43 since his return to DPWT. Smith was on the bag with Canter for his win at the European Open. He also helped bring Canter’s 2nd DPWT title at the Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship 2025.

The duo is already aiming to extend this domination to the PGA Tour.

Canter is eyeing his Masters debut and a potential spot in the European Ryder Cup team. However, they understand the differences in the American courses and how they can affect play. At the Players Championship, acknowledging Smith’s role in helping him navigate the US greens, Canter shared:

“It’s awesome. My caddie [Max] prepped me a little as to what to expect. It’s challenging, certainly off the tee. You have got to get the ball in play because the rough’s up. You are really going to have to play good golf to get in here.”

Clearly, Smith is one of those steady presences that keep Laurie Canter grounded. However, what does the caddie’s life look like outside of his contract with Canter?

Max Smith’s life away from the caddying beat

When Smith isn’t caddying for Canter, he continues to fuel his childhood passion, teeing it up for funsies on the weekends. That can range anywhere from professional events to virtual golf.

Speaking of which, the Englishman’s caddie contended at the Next Golf Tour, shooting a first-round 4-under. Embracing innovation, the event featured simulations and high-tech gear for an indoor golfing experience.

Other than the virtual golfing event, Smith has his fair share of pro wins.

His first professional title came at the Clutch Pro Tour Mizuno Next Gen, a developmental tour to DPWT and the Challenge Tour, in 2022. What made the victory “sweeter” was that it aligned with his mother’s birthday.

Of his personal life outside the greens, not much is known. Smith is a private individual, with his last post dating back to 2023. He is married to Aneisha Beveridge, though little is known about her, as well. His official Instagram handle is @maxsmith91 with a total of 769 followers.
